Barcelona Airport is Spain’s second airport after Madrid Barajas – Barcelona doesn’t like to be outdone by Madrid, so expect Catalonia and the Mediterranean’s Number One airport to expand in coming years.
Most of the traffic at Barcelona-El Prat Airport is domestic or European – the number of intercontinental connections is well below other European airports with a similar level of passenger traffic.
This lack of intercontinental connections has been a constant cause of complaint and pressure by the authorities and local pressure groups in recent years – they want airport to become a centre of world air traffic distribution and not just European.
In recent years low-cost airlines traffic has grown significantly, especially after Vueling and ClickAir established bases at the airport.
These two companies merged in July 2009, and now operate under the name of Vueling. Other low-cost airlines operating from the airport include EasyJet, SkyEurope and WizzAir.
The airport has 3 runways – the 07L/25R and 07R/25L run parallel to each other, and the 02/20 is a cross-runway.
Barcelona has two terminals – T1 and T2.
T2 is the sum of the previous Terminals A, B and C and the new T1 opened on in JUne 2009, adding significant

Terminal 1 - before it opened
capacity to Barcelona-El Prat.
The two terminals have a combined total of 268 check-in counters and 64 boarding gates between them.
A plan for expansion includes a third terminal building and control tower and an additional runway – the 07R/25L.
Once these developments are complete in 2009, the airport will be capable of handling 55 million passengers annually – a significant increase on 33 million passengers in 2007.
The airport will expand in area from 8.45 to 15.33 square kilometres (3.26 to 5.92 sq mi) by late-2009/early-2010.
A further expansion is planned to be finished by 2012, with the building of a new satellite terminal which will increase capacity to 70 million passengers a year.
I want to travel from Barcelona El Prat Airport to Girona Airport.
Which is the best option?
ANSWER: The easiest way (apart from catching another plane) is to get to Barcelona Nord Bus Station (by train and metro – metro stop Arc de Triomf on the red line). There’s a regular bus service to Girona-Costa Brava Airport.

A cool video of Crosswind Landings taken from just outside the perimeter fence at Barcelona Airport and recorded on a very windy day.
The runway in use is 25R, and according to the flight control tower winds varied from 290 to 310º heading and from 24 to 38 knots.
It gives you a great idea of the different plane models’ response to the wind, and how different pilots with the same plane never land in the same way.
Fortunately, they all land safely.

Hey! I’m going to Spain in less than 2 weeks. Booked at the Formula 1 hotel in Mollet del Valles (Barcelona, Spain) and want to know which train to take from the airport to get there… Names of stations will help a lot!! THX
ANSWER: There’s only only 1 line from the Airport (aeroport), the C2, and it goes to the station Mollet Sant Fost, which is 0.8 km from your hotel (The other station in Mollet, Santa Rosa, is further and on another line). You can get walking directions on google maps by using the starting and ending points as:
Estació RENFE Sant Fost
Avenida de Rabassaires 40, 08100 Mollet del Vallès, Spain (Hotel Formule 1 Barcelona Mollet)
It’s a good walk from the station to the hotel – especially if you’re loaded up with bags but there’s a taxi rank outside the train station – depending on the time of day, you might have to wait 10 minutes or so before a taxi arrives!!
See also http://www.renfe.es/cercanias/barcelona/index_horarios.html where you can find the schedules by entering the start station (Aeroport) and end station (Mollet Sant Fost).
How do I get from Barcelona airport to a hotel in Port Olimpic near a Metro station?
I’m not renting a car and am travelling with a child and a good amount of luggage.
What would be the options and the approximate costs?
Thanks.
Answer: A taxi will cost you about 30 Euros, but is fastest.
I would recommend taking the train from the airport to Passeig de Gracia, then transferring to the Metro L4 (yellow line) in the direction of La Pau. I assume your hotel is near Ciutadella-Villa Olimpica, but you can check Google maps for how to walk from there.
The downsides are
- a somewhat long, though well-marked, transfer from the train to metro
- Pickpockets, especially if you’re carrying luggage and looking after a child. So make sure all of your personal belongings are secure.
- Cost is about 2.60 per person for the ride, much less (about 70 cents) if you buy a 10-ride ticket, which I recommend if you will be using public transport during your stay.
There is also a bus that goes to Placa de Catalunya, but it is a little more expensive than the train. What’s more you would have to take the Metro and change from the Green Line (L3) to the Yellow Line.
Too many transfers in my opinion.
Wonderful city. have fun!

Avis Car Hire At Barcelona Airport
Avis Car Rentals have three offices at Barcelona-El Prat Airport located on the First Floor (Planta 1) in Terminal 1 and on the Ground Floor (Planta 0) at Terminals 2B and 2C – if you are flying into Terminal 2A, the Terminal 2B is a short walk and is easily reached via the pedestrian bridge.
If you have any problems with your booking, you’ll find that their website is not very helpful but you can call the Barcelona Airport Avis Car Hire office on +34 932 983 600.
The reason why Avis is a good choice to hire a car from is that it is a stable and trusted brand and it also offers a big choice of pick up and drop off points. In Barcelona, they have five offices at Calle Corcega, Diagonal Mar, El Prat Airport, Barcelona Sants Train Station and at the Parque De Negocios Mas Blau.
Perhaps the only disadvantage of hiring a car from Avis is that they tend to be more expensive than local car rentals firms. However, if you travel a lot and need to hire a car regularly, Avis have lots of discounts for faithful and regular customers.

Getting To Barcelona Airport By Car
Barcelona-El Prat Airport is located about 10 km south-west of Barcelona city centre, between the towns of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans and Sant Boi.
The access road to the airport, the C-31 Barcelona-Castelldefels dual carriageway, connects with the C-32 Barcelona-Sitges, which can accessed from the city of Barcelona via either the interior and coastal ring roads – Ronda de Dalt and Ronda Litoral, respectively – or from Gran Via direction Hospitalet.
